| Introduction | Paraphrase + nói rõ sẽ trả lời cả hai vế, nêu sẵn đánh giá. |
A growing share of workers, especially the young, now earn their living from short-term freelance and platform jobs rather than permanent employment. Several forces explain this shift, and its overall value to the economy depends on how it is regulated.
Technology is the enabling factor. Digital platforms match a driver, designer or translator with a customer within seconds, so work that once required an employer to organise it can now be sold directly, and the barriers to starting are minimal. Economic conditions push in the same direction: secure full-time posts have become scarcer in many sectors, graduate salaries often fail to cover urban rents, and taking several sources of income at once is a rational response. Younger workers also genuinely value autonomy, preferring to choose their hours over clocking in at a fixed desk, particularly while studying or caring for family.
Whether this is positive is harder to answer. There are real gains: labour is matched to demand more efficiently, and people excluded from conventional employment can earn. Nevertheless, I regard the trend as negative in its current form, because it transfers risk from companies to individuals. Gig workers typically have no sick pay, no pension contributions and no protection against a sudden fall in demand, and platforms retain control over pay rates while disclaiming the duties of an employer. The costs do not disappear; they resurface later as an unfunded retirement and greater reliance on the state.
In conclusion, gig work has expanded because platforms made it easy and secure jobs became scarcer. It will only benefit the economy if basic protections are attached to the worker rather than to a permanent contract.
