Childhood obesity is rising steeply in many countries, and one proposed remedy is a complete ban on advertising unhealthy food and drink to children. I fully agree with this measure, both because such advertising exploits an audience that cannot defend itself and because bans of this kind have already proved their worth.
The primary justification is that children lack the cognitive defences adults take for granted. Research has consistently shown that below the age of about eight, children do not recognise persuasive intent at all; they process an advertisement as information rather than salesmanship. When cartoon characters appear on cereal boxes and sugary snacks are promoted inside mobile games, the child has no realistic chance of resisting. Allowing commercial pressure of this sort is therefore not free speech but an unequal contest, and regulation is exactly what governments exist to provide.
Equally important is the evidence that such restrictions work. After Chile prohibited child-directed marketing of high-sugar products and stripped cartoon mascots from packaging, purchases of the affected drinks fell sharply within two years, and Britain saw similar shifts after restricting junk food advertising before the evening watershed. Notably, several manufacturers reformulated their products, cutting sugar so that they would once again fall outside the ban. A single policy thus improved both what is promoted and what is sold, which few health campaigns achieve.
In conclusion, I strongly support a complete ban on unhealthy food advertising aimed at children, since it protects those least able to protect themselves and has a demonstrable effect. It must, however, be paired with better school meals and nutrition teaching, because advertising is one driver among several.
