Schools are divided over whether smartphones and tablets belong in the classroom. Some teachers see them as powerful learning tools, while others regard them as a constant distraction. In my view the distinction that matters is ownership: school-controlled devices can be valuable, whereas personal phones should stay out of lessons.
The educational argument is genuine. A tablet gives every pupil access to material no classroom could hold, from primary sources to interactive simulations, and lets a chemistry class observe a reaction that would be too hazardous to perform on a bench. For students with dyslexia or impaired vision, text-to-speech and magnification turn an impossible task into a manageable one, so devices can be a great leveller. Learning to research and evaluate online sources is also a skill schools are expected to teach, and that is impossible without hands-on practice.
Nevertheless, personal smartphones are a different matter, because they are engineered to capture attention. Notifications from friends arrive during a lesson and pull cognitive attention away even when the screen stays dark; research has repeatedly found that the mere presence of a phone in a pocket lowers concentration. Several countries have now restricted phones in schools, and the reported improvement was largest among lower-attaining pupils, precisely those least able to resist the temptation.
In conclusion, I support banning personal phones during lessons while equipping classrooms with school-owned tablets used for specific, teacher-directed tasks. That way pupils gain the benefits of technology without carrying a source of distraction in their pockets all day.
