Whether economic growth is the solution to global poverty or a threat to the planet is one of the defining arguments of our time. Having weighed both positions, I believe growth remains indispensable, but that its composition matters far more than its speed.
The case for growth rests on how poverty is actually reduced. Charity alone has never lifted a country out of destitution; jobs, wages and tax revenue have. East Asia offers the clearest evidence, where industrialisation lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty within two generations and funded the schools and hospitals that followed. Without an expanding economy, governments simply cannot pay for clean water, vaccination programmes or teachers. Telling the poorest countries to stop growing, while wealthy nations continue to enjoy the benefits of their own past expansion, would be indefensible.
The environmental objection is equally serious. The growth model followed for two centuries relies on burning fossil fuels, clearing forests and extracting water faster than it is replaced. The resulting environmental degradation ultimately falls hardest on the very people that growth is meant to help: farmers lose harvests to drought and coastal communities lose homes to rising seas. The lesson, however, is not that growth must stop, but that it cannot continue at the expense of the natural systems people depend on for food and water.
In conclusion, both sides are describing something real. The task for governments is to decouple growth from emissions by investing in low-carbon energy, pricing pollution honestly and protecting forests, so that poverty keeps falling without handing the bill to the next generation.
