The bar chart shows how much an average household in four European countries spent in supermarkets each week in 1998 and 2008, measured in euros.
Overall, spending rose in every country over the decade, but the gap between them narrowed appreciably, and France replaced Germany as the biggest-spending country.
In 1998 the three Western European countries were closely grouped. German households spent the most, at 71 euros a week, followed by France on 62 and Italy on 58. Polish households lagged far behind on just 24 euros, less than half the German figure.
By 2008 the ranking at the top had changed. French spending rose by 26 euros to 88, the highest of the four, while Germany recorded the smallest increase, up only 13 euros to 84. Italy reached 79. The most striking change, however, was in Poland, where weekly spending more than doubled to 61 euros. Although Poland remained in last place, it had closed much of the distance to Italy, which had been more than 30 euros ahead in 1998.
