Mixed charts — Cinema attendance in three countries and average ticket prices

The bar chart shows annual cinema admissions per person in three countries between 2005 and 2020, while the line graph gives the average ticket price over the same period.

Overall, ticket prices rose steadily and without exception in all three countries, whereas attendance followed three quite different paths. Country A had both the dearest tickets and the sharpest fall in cinema-going, while Country C, the cheapest, was the only one where attendance rose throughout.

Admissions in Country A declined at every measurement, from 4.6 visits per person in 2005 to just 1.6 in 2020, a fall of roughly two-thirds. Country B moved in the opposite direction at first, climbing from 2.2 to a peak of 3.6 in 2015, before dropping back to 2.1. Country C rose without interruption from 1.1 to 2.9, overtaking both rivals in the final year.

Ticket prices tell a simpler story. Country A's tickets were the most expensive throughout, rising from 6.4 to 11.2 dollars, while Country B's went from 4.1 to 7.4. Country C remained much the cheapest, though its prices still more than doubled, from 2.0 to 4.6 dollars.
