The diagram shows how a rooftop solar water heater supplies a house with hot water.
Overall, the system consists of a roof-mounted collector panel and an insulated storage tank, around which water circulates by itself: water heated in the panel rises to the tank, while cooler water sinks back to the panel to be reheated. Two support features — a cold-water feed and an electric back-up — keep the supply constant.
The cycle begins when sunlight strikes the collector panel on the roof and heats the water inside its pipes. Because hot water is lighter than cold, it rises naturally through a pipe into the tank, which is insulated to retain the heat. At the same time, the cooler water at the bottom of the tank flows back down to the panel, so the loop repeats itself continuously whenever the sun is shining.
Hot water for the house is simply drawn off the tank by the taps and shower. As it is used, cold water from the mains automatically tops the tank up. Finally, on cloudy days an electric heating element inside the tank switches on and boosts the temperature, ensuring hot water is available whatever the weather.
