The diagram shows how milk is produced on a dairy farm and then divided into four different products at the dairy.
Overall, the journey has two halves: a farm phase in which the milk is collected and kept inside an unbroken cold chain, and a factory phase in which a single tank of milk splits into four production lines before everything is delivered, still chilled, to the shops.
On the farm, cows graze on grass throughout the day and are milked by machine twice daily. The fresh milk goes straight into a refrigerated tank, where it is held at four degrees Celsius, and a refrigerated tanker collects it every day and carries it to the dairy — so the milk is kept cold at every step.
At the dairy the milk is first pasteurised and separated. It is then divided between four lines, becoming bottled milk, cheese, butter, or yoghurt and cream. Whatever the product, the final stage is the same: everything is packaged, date-stamped, and delivered by refrigerated lorry to supermarkets. From a single herd of grazing cows, therefore, the process ends with four distinct chilled products on the same shelves.
