The diagram shows one method of producing ceramic pots, in which the pots can be shaped by either of two techniques.
Overall, there are nine stages. After the clay has been prepared, each pot is formed in one of two alternative ways — by hand or by mould — and from that point all pots follow the same route through drying, two separate firings and glazing.
The process begins when clay is dug from the ground. It is then sieved to remove stones and mixed with water until it reaches the right consistency. At the shaping stage the maker chooses a technique: the pot is either shaped by hand on a potter''s wheel, or the clay is pressed into a two-part mould. Whichever method is used, the newly formed pots are left to dry in the sun.
The pots are then fired in a kiln at about 1,000 degrees Celsius. After this first firing they are dipped into liquid glaze, and a second firing follows, during which the glaze melts into the smooth, glassy coating typical of finished ceramics. Finally the pots are inspected, packed and dispatched to shops. The only real choice in the whole process, therefore, comes at the shaping stage — everything before and after it is identical for every pot.
