The flow chart shows the eight steps by which a book travels from the author''s desk to the bookshop.
Overall, the process is not a simple straight line: it contains one decision point, at which a manuscript may be rejected, and one revision loop, in which author and editor pass the text back and forth until both approve it.
The process starts when the author writes a manuscript and submits it to a publisher. The publisher then decides whether to accept it. If it is rejected, the manuscript is simply returned to the author and the process ends there. If it is accepted, however, the text moves into editing.
This editing stage forms the loop at the heart of the chart: the editor suggests changes, the author revises the text, and the amended version goes back to the editor — a cycle that may repeat several times until both sides are satisfied. Once the text is final, a designer creates the cover and the pages are typeset. The book is then printed and bound at the printing works and delivered to bookshops. As a final touch, the chart shows the finished copies — and the royalties — flowing back to the author who began the whole process.
