The four pie charts compare the reasons passengers gave for travelling through Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton and Manchester airports in 2016.
Overall, holidays were the most common reason for flying at three of the four airports, with Heathrow the stand-out exception, where business travel was the largest single purpose. Trips to visit friends and relatives made up a broadly similar share in every case.
Luton was the most leisure-oriented airport by a wide margin: almost three quarters of its passengers, 74%, were travelling on holiday, while only 9% were flying on business. Gatwick and Manchester showed a similar profile in a less extreme form, with holidaymakers accounting for 61% and 56% of passengers respectively, against 22% and 26% travelling for work.
Heathrow was quite different. There, business travellers formed the largest group at 44%, six percentage points ahead of the 38% flying on holiday — the only airport where work outweighed leisure. The two remaining categories varied little between the airports: visits to friends and relatives ranged narrowly from 9% at Gatwick to 13% at Luton, and other reasons accounted for just 4% to 8% everywhere.
