Maps — A city zoo in 2000 and today

The two maps compare the layout of a city zoo in 2000 with its layout today.

Overall, the basic framework of the zoo — the lake, the southern main gate and most of the animal enclosures — has been retained, but the site has gained two major indoor attractions and a safari train that now circles the whole zoo, while the picnic area has been moved to make room for these changes.

In 2000 the lake lay in the north-western corner, with the big cats and the birds housed along the northern edge. A middle row contained the elephants, the monkeys and a picnic area, and a single café stood in the south near the main gate, with footpaths linking the different sections.

Today the zoo looks noticeably more modern. The old bird enclosure has been replaced by a new aquarium, and the monkeys' outdoor cage has become an indoor primate house; the birds now occupy the enclosure in the middle row where the picnic area used to be. That picnic area has been relocated to the south-western corner, and a second café has opened beside the original one. The most striking addition, however, is the safari train, whose track runs in a loop around the entire perimeter of the site.
