The first map shows the present layout of a small town centre, while the second sets out a proposal to reorganise the same area around pedestrians.
Overall, the scheme would turn a centre currently dominated by vehicles into one designed for people on foot. The main buildings are to be retained, but almost all of the space now given over to traffic and parking is set to make way for open public space.
The clearest change affects the roads. High Street, which at present carries traffic in both directions, is to be pedestrianised along its whole length, and Mill Lane, running north from it, would be narrowed and restricted to delivery vehicles. To support this, both the bus station and the car park in the south would be relocated to the ring road, removing motor vehicles from the centre altogether.
The land these facilities release would be given a new purpose. The site of the bus station is to become a town square, with gardens laid out immediately to its east where the car park now stands, so that the centre gains green space it currently lacks. Elsewhere the picture changes little: the shops on the north side would simply gain outdoor seating, while the market hall and the offices are left untouched.
