The two maps show the changes that took place in the village of Stokeford between 1930 and 2010.
Overall, a quiet farming village became an almost entirely residential settlement: the farmland was sold for housing, the grand house became a retirement home, and village shopping all but disappeared, while the river, the main road and the school stayed where they were.
In 1930 the River Stoke ran along the western edge of the village, with the main road parallel to it. A large area of farmland spread across the north-east, and the villagers were served by two shops, a small school, and a scattering of houses. In the south-east stood a large house set in gardens — the grandest property in the village.
By 2010 the farmland had been sold off for development and covered by two new housing estates, and further houses had filled in the gaps around the original cluster. Of the two shops, only one remained, now operating as a post office. The school, by contrast, had been extended to serve the larger population, and the big house had been converted into a retirement home, its gardens built over by new wings.
