The two plans compare a university sports centre as it exists today with the redeveloped centre that is planned to replace it.
Overall, the redevelopment trades outdoor space for indoor facilities: the building will expand to cover virtually the whole site, the outdoor tennis courts and playing field will disappear, and in their place the centre will gain a fifty-metre pool, a leisure pool, a large sports hall and two dance studios.
At present, the built section occupies only the southern strip of the site, containing a twenty-five-metre swimming pool in the west, a reception in the centre and a gym in the east. The northern half is open-air, with two tennis courts side by side and an oval playing field in the north-east corner. Visitors arrive by an entrance road from the south.
After redevelopment, almost every part of the site will be under one roof. The old pool will be replaced by a fifty-metre pool, and a separate leisure pool will be added on the eastern side. The enlarged reception will incorporate a sports shop and a café. Across the northern half of the building, a sports hall for badminton and basketball will stand beside two dance studios and a new changing area — occupying exactly the ground where the courts and field used to be.
