The two plans compare the layout of a school library as it was five years ago with its present arrangement.
Overall, the library has been transformed from a room designed mainly for storing and lending books into a flexible study space. The area given over to shelving has been noticeably reduced, while the entrance and the reading area have been left as they were.
Most of the changes involve replacing older facilities. One of the two blocks of shelving that stood along the north wall has been converted into a computer zone, halving the space devoted to books. The card catalogue in the centre of the room has disappeared and in its place there is now a group study room, while the store room in the south-east corner has been turned into a quiet corner for individual reading. The librarian's desk beside the entrance has given way to a self-service desk.
Two features are unaffected. The remaining bank of shelves in the north-west has been retained in exactly the same position, as have the reading tables occupying the north-east corner. Access to the library is still gained through the same entrance on the southern side of the room.
