The two maps show how the area around Milldon railway station has changed since 1995.
Overall, while the railway line, the station building and the High Street are all still in place, the district has been converted from one serving goods traffic to one serving passengers: the warehouse and coal yard have become a bus interchange and shops, and the dangerous level crossing has been replaced by a footbridge.
In 1995 the railway ran east–west across the top of the area, with the station on its southern side. To the east, a level crossing carried a minor road over the tracks, and pedestrians crossed the rails there on foot. The strip between the railway and the High Street was dominated by a large warehouse and a coal yard, with only a small taxi rank in the western corner.
Today the level crossing has gone entirely, replaced by an arched footbridge over the line. The warehouse site is now a bus interchange, from which a short link road runs down to the High Street, allowing buses to connect trains with the town centre. The old coal yard has been redeveloped as a row of shops and cafés, and a public station square has been laid out to their east, completing the area's shift from freight to passengers.
