The two maps compare an Olympic village as it operated during the Games in 2000 with the same site today.
Overall, the site is a story of reuse rather than demolition: every single venue still stands, but each has been handed over to the public — as sport, housing, education or leisure — and the only newly built feature is a metro line.
During the Games, the site centred on an 80,000-seat athletics stadium, with an aquatics centre and the athletes'' apartment blocks to its east. Dining halls fed the competitors, a media centre sat inside a security zone, and the southern strip was a coach park closed to the public.
Today each of these has a second life. The stadium hosts a football club, its capacity reduced to 50,000; the aquatics centre is now a public swimming pool and gym; and the apartments have been sold as 2,000 flats. The dining halls have become shops and cafés, while the media centre has been converted into a university campus. The old coach park is now a public park, and a new metro connects the whole site to the city — turning a sealed-off sporting enclave into an ordinary, open neighbourhood.
