The two maps show a small village on Ireland''s west coast in 2000 and as it is today.
Overall, the village''s buildings and layout are largely intact, but its economy has clearly shifted from fishing to tourism: the modest pier now serves ferries rather than fishing boats, and the only piece of farmland has become the site of a forty-room hotel.
In 2000 this was a quiet fishing settlement. A small wooden pier on the Atlantic shore sheltered a handful of fishing boats; the coast road ran north–south through the village, past a cluster of three cottages, a pub and, further east, the church. The south-eastern corner was sheep pasture.
Today the same road passes an altered village. The old pier has been replaced by a larger concrete one, from which a ferry to the islands and boat tours now operate. The cottages survive but are let to visitors as holiday accommodation, and the pub has gained a restaurant. On the old pasture stand the new hotel and its car park — the biggest single change on the map — while the church, unchanged in every respect, watches over a village that now lives off its visitors rather than its catch.
