Maps — The outskirts of Fosbury in 1980 and 2015

The two maps show how the outskirts of Fosbury changed between 1980 and 2015.

Overall, the town has pushed outwards into what was farmland: of the four green areas on the 1980 map, only the woodland survives, while offices and a sixty-home estate now cover the rest. The upgraded road junction signals how much busier the area has become.

In 1980 the area was agricultural on both sides of the road that led to the town centre. North of the road lay orchards in the west and woodland in the east; to the south stood a farmhouse with a broad stretch of grazing land beside it.

By 2015 three of these four spaces had changed hands. The orchards had been cleared for a business park of four office blocks, and the grazing land had disappeared beneath three neat rows of new houses. The farmhouse building survived, but as a nursery school rather than a farm. Only the woodland remained in its 1980 form — indeed it was now protected and threaded with a nature trail. At the junction between the two halves, a roundabout had replaced the simple crossroads, built to handle the traffic that the offices and houses inevitably brought with them.
