Maps — A fishing harbour converted into a ferry port

The two maps show how a small fishing harbour was transformed into a ferry port.

Overall, the harbour has changed its function completely: every trace of the fishing industry — the wooden jetty, the boats and the fish market — has vanished, and in its place a vehicle-ferry operation has been built, with a concrete berth, a terminal, a large marshalling area and an extended breakwater.

Before the conversion, a wooden jetty projected into the sea on the western side of the harbour, with a handful of fishing boats moored beside it. A fish market stood on the shore nearby, and a row of fishermen's cottages lined the eastern part of the seafront. A short breakwater sheltered the harbour from the east, and a narrow coast road ran along the southern edge of the site.

Today a solid roll-on roll-off ferry berth occupies the place of the old jetty, and a car ferry docks where the fishing boats once lay. The market has given way to a terminal and ticket hall, behind which a marshalling area with space for a hundred and twenty cars connects directly to the coast road, itself now widened. The breakwater has been extended to almost twice its length, and of the original cottages only one remains.
