The two maps show how a dock area has changed since 1980.
Overall, the physical structure of the dock — the water basin and the quay — survives intact, but its purpose has been reversed: a working freight port has become a leisure waterfront, with every industrial element either removed or converted to new uses.
In 1980 the area was dominated by industry. Two large warehouses stood along the northern edge, a freight railway ran across the middle of the site, and cranes on the quay loaded and unloaded the cargo ships moored in the basin.
Today the same footprint serves pleasure rather than trade. Warehouse 1 has been converted into loft apartments and Warehouse 2 into an art gallery, with a row of cafés between them. The railway line has become a waterfront boulevard following exactly the old track, and the cranes have gone altogether. In the basin, yachts ride at anchor where cargo ships once berthed, making the dock a marina, and a new footpath links the boulevard down to the water''s edge. The quay itself — now a viewing spot rather than a workplace — is the one element performing its original role.
