The chart compares the share of adults in Solmark who performed six activities on their smartphones daily in 2016 and 2024.
Overall, five of the six activities became more common — with banking and shopping showing spectacular growth — while the single exception is the phone''s original purpose: voice calls, which fell from the most widespread activity to fifth place.
Messaging led the risers, climbing from 78 to 93 per cent and taking over the top position. Social media grew from 62 to 79 per cent, and watching video nearly doubled, from 41 to 74 per cent. The most dramatic changes, however, involve money: daily mobile banking tripled from 22 to 68 per cent, and shopping almost did the same, rising from 14 to 41 per cent — the two largest proportional jumps in the chart.
Calls moved alone in the opposite direction. In 2016 they were the single most common daily activity at 83 per cent; by 2024 only 58 per cent of adults made a call each day, placing calls below video and barely above shopping. The device, in other words, is used ever more intensively — and ever less as a telephone.
