The bar chart compares the value of development aid, in billions of US dollars, provided by six wealthy countries in each of the three years from 2008 to 2010.
Overall, the United States was by far the most generous donor in absolute terms and increased its contribution every year, whereas Sweden gave the least and its figure hardly moved. Most of the remaining countries donated slightly more in the final year than in the first.
American aid dwarfed that of the other nations, rising from 26.8 billion dollars in 2008 to 28.8 billion and then 30.4 billion in 2010. At every point the US gave at least twice as much as its nearest rival, and its increase alone over the three years, 3.6 billion dollars, was comparable in size to Sweden's entire annual contribution.
Among the middle-ranking donors the picture was less uniform. German aid dipped before recovering, falling from 14 to 12.1 billion dollars and then rising to 12.9 billion, which left it marginally below its starting figure. Britain, France and Japan all closed the gap on Germany, ending at 13.1, 12.9 and 11 billion respectively. Sweden held steady at around 4.5 billion, the smallest donor throughout.
