The bar chart shows the percentage of people in urban areas, small towns and rural areas of one UK region who live within a fifteen-minute journey of five key services.
Overall, access declined consistently from urban areas to small towns and then to the countryside for every service shown. Hospitals were the least accessible facility for all three groups, and the difference between town and country was widest in that case.
For the four everyday services, city residents were extremely well provided for: 98% lived close to a supermarket, 96% to a GP surgery, 94% to a primary school and 91% to a post office. Residents of small towns were between six and twelve percentage points behind on each measure. Rural residents, however, were markedly worse served, with figures ranging from 61% for GP surgeries down to just 46% for post offices, meaning that over half of country dwellers were not within easy reach of a post office.
Hospital access fell away sharply in every area. Even in cities, only 72% of people lived within fifteen minutes of one, and this dropped to 48% in small towns. In rural areas the figure was barely one in five, at 19%, which represents the widest disparity in the chart.
