| Introduction | Paraphrase + nêu quan điểm: đồng ý với mối lo, phản đối mốc tuổi cứng nhắc. |
| Body 1 (Đồng ý phần lo ngại) | P: mạng xã hội và nội dung không phù hợp gây hại thật ở tuổi nhỏ · E: so sánh ngoại hình, bắt nạt trên mạng, mất ngủ · I: trẻ 10-12 tuổi chưa đủ khả năng tự điều tiết. |
It has been suggested that children should not be allowed smartphones until they reach the age of sixteen. I share the concerns behind this proposal, but I disagree with such a rigid age limit, because it treats a genuinely useful tool as if it were uniformly harmful.
The worries are certainly legitimate. Giving an eleven-year-old unrestricted access to social media exposes them to constant comparison with edited images, to cyberbullying that follows them into their bedroom, and to content they are not yet equipped to interpret. Younger children also lack the self-regulation needed to put a device down once they have started, and disturbed sleep and falling concentration are well-documented consequences. If the question were whether primary school children should hold full social media accounts, I would agree with the statement entirely.
A smartphone, however, is not only a social media device. For many families it is above all a safety tool: parents can reach a child travelling home alone, and the child can call for help in an emergency, which is precisely why most parents buy one in the first place. Phones are also used daily for homework, translation and timetables. The sensible response is therefore to graduate access rather than forbid it: basic call-and-message handsets for younger children, then smartphones with parental controls and social media disabled, with unrestricted use at around sixteen.
In conclusion, I agree that unsupervised smartphone use harms young children, but a blanket ban until the age of sixteen misdiagnoses the problem. It is the applications and the absence of supervision, not the device itself, that require restriction.
