Advantages and disadvantages — Taking a gap year before university

Taking a year out between school and university has become a common choice for young people in many countries. The practice brings genuine benefits, but it also carries risks that depend heavily on how the year is actually spent.

The main advantage is maturity. Eighteen-year-olds have spent their entire lives inside classrooms, and a year of paid work, volunteering or travel teaches them to manage money, deal with strangers and shoulder responsibility, none of which appears on a school syllabus. Just as valuable is the chance to test a career before committing to it: students who spend months in a hospital or a design studio often discover that the subject they had chosen was not what they imagined, and changing direction at that point costs a year rather than a whole degree. Those who do proceed usually arrive with a clearer sense of purpose and are markedly less likely to drop out in their first year.

The disadvantages are equally real. Study habits fade surprisingly quickly, and returning to academic writing and mathematics after twelve months away can be difficult, particularly in subjects that build directly on school knowledge. A gap year without a plan easily becomes a drifting year, and the travel that features in most descriptions of it is expensive, so the option is not equally available to everyone. A small minority never return to formal education at all.

In conclusion, the advantages of a gap year outweigh its drawbacks provided the time is planned deliberately and a university place is held open. Unstructured time off, by contrast, is a far less attractive proposition.
