Band 8.0 — Table: Commuting Modes in Five Cities

The table compares the percentage of working adults in five cities who commute by car, public transport, cycling and walking.

Overall, the car is the most popular means of getting to work in the majority of the cities, whereas cycling tends to attract the fewest commuters. Dunmore stands out as the striking exception, being the only city where the bicycle leads.

Car use is heaviest in Eastport and Avonford, where roughly three in five commuters drive, at 62% and 58% respectively—more than double the equivalent figure in Dunmore, which records the lowest car share at just 25%. Public transport displays the reverse ranking: it carries 42% of commuters in Corvale, its highest level in the table, yet only 18% in car-dominated Eastport.

Cycling and walking play smaller roles almost everywhere else. Walking remains within a narrow band, staying between 10% and 15% in every city, while cycling accounts for under 10% of journeys in three of the five. The outlier once again is Dunmore, where 35% cycle to work—seven times the figure recorded in Eastport—making the bicycle the city's single most popular mode.
