The pie chart shows how energy is used for five different purposes in a typical home in one country.
Overall, keeping the home and its water warm absorbs the clear majority of household energy, whereas cooking and lighting together account for less than a fifth of the total.
Space heating is by far the largest single use, representing 42% of all energy consumed, almost twice the share of any other category. Once the 18% devoted to heating water is added, warmth of one kind or another accounts for fully three-fifths of a household's energy. Electrical appliances, ranging from refrigerators to televisions, make up 22% of consumption, the second-largest share overall.
The remaining categories are considerably smaller. Cooking uses one in every ten units of energy, while lighting, at just 8%, is the smallest category of all. The figures therefore suggest that efforts to conserve energy at home would achieve far more through improved insulation than through switching off lights, since heating is by some distance the dominant use.
