Companies increasingly answer customers with artificial intelligence rather than human staff. Provided a human remains within reach, I believe this is a positive development.

The frustrations are familiar and real. Chatbots misunderstand unusual problems, trap callers in loops, and can feel insulting when a distressed customer needs judgement and empathy that no script provides. Poorly deployed, they are less a service than a barrier protecting companies from their own customers, and firms that use them merely to cut staff deserve the criticism they receive.

Nevertheless, used well, the technology improves service in ways human teams cannot. Chatbots answer instantly, at three in the morning, in dozens of languages, and without queues — and since the great majority of enquiries are routine, such as delivery times, password resets and refunds, automation resolves most problems faster than any call centre could. This, in turn, transforms the economics of good service: freed from repetitive queries, human agents can spend real time on the complex and emotional cases where they are irreplaceable, and firms of every size can afford support that once only corporations offered. Small businesses gain most, competing with giants by offering round-the-clock help. Modern systems also improve continuously, learning from every conversation, and the best of them escalate to a person the moment they detect confusion or anger — the design feature on which everything else depends.

In conclusion, AI customer service is a poor master but an excellent first line. Where it handles the routine and hands humans the difficult, customers wait less, businesses serve better, and staff do more meaningful work. On that condition — a human always reachable — this is a positive development.
