For millions of people, news now arrives through social media feeds rather than newspapers or broadcasters. I believe the disadvantages of this shift outweigh the advantages.

The benefits should be acknowledged. Social media delivers news instantly and freely, lets eyewitnesses report events before journalists arrive, and gives a voice to people and places traditional media ignored. During disasters and protests, ordinary users have provided information that saved lives.

Nevertheless, two harms weigh more heavily. The first is the collapse of accuracy. Traditional news passes through editors and fact-checkers; a viral post passes through no one. False stories spread faster than corrections — research famously found that falsehood travels further and faster than truth online — and by the time a rumour is disproved, millions have absorbed it. The second harm is deeper: feeds are personalised by algorithms designed to hold attention, not to inform. Users are steadily shown more of what they already believe and less of what challenges them, and outrage is promoted because it drives engagement. The result is a public that shares fewer common facts and trusts no source at all, a condition in which conspiracy theories flourish and democratic debate decays. Societies with weakened professional journalism have watched elections and public health campaigns distorted by exactly this machinery.

In conclusion, social media has made news faster and more democratic, but it has also made it less true and more divisive. Speed without accuracy misinforms, and personalisation without balance polarises; both strike at the very purpose news exists to serve. Until platforms are redesigned around accuracy rather than engagement, the disadvantages of getting news this way clearly outweigh the advantages.
