Across the world, people are marrying later than any previous generation, and many are not marrying at all. This essay will explain why, and then argue that the change is broadly positive.

Two reasons drive the trend. The first is the transformation of women's lives: as women gain education, careers and financial independence, marriage has shifted from economic necessity to genuine choice, and choices made freely are made later. The second reason is economic pressure on the young: housing costs, insecure work and student debt mean many couples delay marriage until they can afford the life they want to build, while longer lifespans have quietly removed the old urgency.

Turning to the evaluation, I consider this development positive on balance. Later marriages are demonstrably more stable: divorce rates decline steadily with age at marriage, because partners who already know themselves choose better and quarrel less over who they turn out to be. Marriages of choice are also more equal than marriages of necessity — a union a woman can afford to leave is one that must treat her well. And children, though fewer, are born to parents more prepared to raise them. The genuine costs — falling birth rates that strain pension systems, and the loneliness of some who postponed partnership too long — are real, but they call for family-friendly policies such as affordable housing and childcare, not for pushing people back into early marriages many would regret.

In conclusion, people marry later because marriage has become a choice rather than a requirement, and freer choices tend to be better ones. The demographic challenges are manageable; the gains in stability, equality and autonomy are not worth reversing.
