Some believe competitive sports teach children valuable lessons, while others argue cooperative activities without winners serve them better. While cooperation clearly matters, I side with those who value competition, provided it is sensibly managed.

Supporters of purely cooperative activities worry about the losers. In every race, most children do not win, and repeated defeat can damage confidence at a sensitive age. Cooperative games, where success comes from working together, teach teamwork without tears, and they include weaker children whom competitive selection often leaves on the bench. A school sports day where everyone contributes, they argue, builds happier children than one that crowns a single champion. Childhood, they conclude, should build children up before life knocks them down.

Nevertheless, I believe well-run competition teaches lessons cooperation cannot. Life beyond school contains exams, job interviews and setbacks, and the playing field is a safe place to rehearse them: children learn to lose without despair, to win without arrogance, and to try again — a resilience no trophy-free game develops. Competition also reveals the link between effort and improvement; a swimmer who cuts two seconds from her time discovers that practice works, and this belief transfers to study and later work. Team sports blend both values anyway, since players cooperate intensely with teammates while competing with opponents. The real task for schools is management: matching children fairly, praising improvement rather than only victory, and giving every child a role.

In conclusion, cooperative activities protect feelings, but sensitively managed competition prepares children for a world that will not always let them win, while teaching effort, humility and recovery. Schools should keep competition — and run it wisely.
