Many young adults today cannot cook a meal, sew a button or perform simple repairs. This essay will explain why such practical skills are disappearing and then argue that the trend is a negative development.

Two causes stand out. The first is convenience: delivery apps, cheap fast fashion and disposable products mean the skills are no longer required daily — why learn to cook when dinner arrives in thirty minutes, or to mend clothes that cost less than the repair? The second is the changed priorities of childhood. Crowded academic schedules leave little room for home economics or workshop classes, which many schools have cut entirely, while busy parents find it quicker to do tasks themselves than to teach them.

I regard this loss as clearly negative. Most directly, it is expensive and unhealthy: people who cannot cook eat processed food and pay others for every small service, a lifelong tax on both wallet and body that falls heaviest on the poor. It is also environmentally damaging, since the inability to repair feeds a culture of throwing away and replacing. Deeper still, practical incompetence breeds dependence. Adults who can feed themselves, fix a leak or assemble furniture carry a quiet confidence and resilience that no delivery app provides — qualities that matter most precisely when systems fail, as pandemics and power cuts periodically remind us.

In conclusion, practical skills are fading because convenience has made them optional and schools have stopped teaching them. The result is costlier, less healthy and more dependent lives — a negative development that schools and parents could largely reverse by treating cooking and repair as basic education rather than quaint traditions.
